Backlit flex is a translucent flex that lets light pass through, so a print glows when lamps or LED strips sit behind it. It is the skin of the glow sign boards you see on medical shops, clinics, restaurants and showrooms across Pune. 3 Red Media prints backlit flex at Chandni Chowk for new boxes and for replacing faded skins on boxes already in place.
How a glow sign board is built
A glow sign board is a shallow box, usually a metal or aluminium frame a few inches deep. Inside are tube lights or LED modules. The front is a sheet of backlit flex stretched tight across the frame. Switch the lights on and the whole face lights up evenly, so the board reads at night from much further away than a frontlit one.
The flex is the only part that carries your design, which is why it gets replaced most often. Shops change their name, add a service, update a phone number, or the old skin simply fades. A new backlit print in the same box is a quick upgrade.
Frontlit vs backlit flex
This is the question that comes up most. Using the wrong one is a common and costly mistake.
| Frontlit flex (normal or star) | Backlit flex | |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Comes from the front: sun or a lamp | Comes from behind, through the material |
| Material | Opaque, blocks light | Translucent, spreads light evenly |
| Inside a light box | Dull, uneven, shows tube shadows | Glows evenly |
| Without a light box | Looks normal in daylight | Can look a little pale by day |
| Use for | Banners, frame boards, hoardings | Glow sign boxes, lit panels, light pillars |
If your board is lit by a lamp from above or below, it is frontlit, and star flex is usually the better choice. If the lights are inside the box, you need backlit.
Getting colour right on a lit print
Light shining through a print washes colours out. A design that looks perfect on screen can turn pastel once a tube light sits behind it. Backlit printing generally uses heavier ink coverage to compensate, and a few design choices also help:
- A light or white background glows well and reads strongly at night.
- Large areas of dark colour block the light and leave the board looking dead. Use dark colours for text, not for the whole background.
- Thin fonts and tiny text disappear into the glow. Bold, simple letters work best.
- Keep important text away from the frame edges, where lighting is often weaker.
Look at the proof imagining it lit from behind. If the background is dark navy or black, consider flipping it to light with dark letters, or ask for advice on the proof.
Measuring an existing box
Measure the outer frame width and height in feet and inches. Then check how the flex is held: some frames have a channel or clip rail and the flex is cut to the inner size with a small margin; others have the flex pulled round the edge and fixed at the back. Send a photo of the board edge if you are unsure. The visible area is what your design should be laid out for.
| Box size (ft) | Area | Seen on |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 2 | 8 sq ft | Small clinic, pharmacy side board |
| 6 × 3 | 18 sq ft | Single shop, salon |
| 8 × 3 | 24 sq ft | Shop fascia, restaurant |
| 10 × 4 | 40 sq ft | Showroom, larger frontage |
| 12 × 4 | 48 sq ft | Wide shop front, corner shop |
Where backlit flex is used in Pune
Glow sign boards are everywhere businesses trade into the evening. Pharmacies, clinics and diagnostic centres use them because people search for them after dark; the hospital and clinic signage page covers that work. Restaurants and cafés light their names and menus; see restaurant branding. Mobile shops, opticians, salons and kirana stores along busy roads use them for the same reason: a lit board is noticed from a moving vehicle at night.
Backlit flex also goes into light pillars, lit menu boards and double-sided boxes that stick out from a building so they are seen from both directions.
Tube lights or LED behind the flex?
Older boxes in Pune often have fluorescent tubes; newer ones mostly use LED modules or strips. Either works with backlit flex. What matters for the print is spacing: if the lights are too few or too close to the face, you see bright stripes and dark gaps. If your old board shows stripes, the fix may be in the box, not the flex.
Life of a backlit skin
Backlit flex sits in front of lights for hours every night and faces daylight and weather by day, so it ages from both sides. Sun and heat fade the inks over time; dust settles on the face and dulls the glow. Wiping the face gently with a damp cloth helps, and replacing a faded skin is far cheaper than a new box. If the board’s lights are on most of the night, keep the box ventilated, because trapped heat is hard on any print.
Ordering backlit flex
Send the box size, a photo of the board if it is an existing one, and the design or text you want. You get the price and a proof on WhatsApp; printing waits for your approval. The ready time is confirmed based on size and queue. Collect from Chandni Chowk or ask for delivery across Pune and PCMC, and fitting into the box can be arranged. Prefer a form? Use get a quote.
