An event backdrop is the large printed panel behind a stage, a photo spot or a registration desk, usually printed on flex and tied to a truss or pipe frame. It frames everyone who stands in front of it, so it ends up in every photo and video from the event. 3 Red Media prints event backdrops at Chandni Chowk for corporate events, weddings, birthdays, Ganeshotsav mandals and launches across Pune.
Kinds of backdrops
- Stage backdrop: the big panel behind speakers or performers, often 16 to 30 ft wide. Carries the event name, date, logos and sponsor strip.
- Photo wall or selfie wall: a smaller backdrop at the entrance or near the stage where guests take pictures. Weddings, birthdays and launches all use one.
- Logo wall (step-and-repeat): a repeating grid of logos used behind press interviews and red-carpet spots. Whichever way the photo is cropped, the brand shows.
- Registration desk backdrop: a medium panel behind the help desk with the event name and directions.
- Pop-up backdrop: a curved or flat display on a folding frame, popular at exhibitions.
Common backdrop sizes
| Use | Typical size (ft) | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday or haldi photo backdrop | 8 × 8, 10 × 8 | 64 to 80 sq ft |
| Entrance photo wall | 8 × 8, 10 × 10 | 64 to 100 sq ft |
| Conference stage | 16 × 8, 20 × 10 | 128 to 200 sq ft |
| Large stage or mandal | 24 × 12, 30 × 15 | 288 to 450 sq ft |
| Press logo wall | 8 × 8 or 10 × 8 | 64 to 80 sq ft |
Very wide stage backdrops are printed in panels and joined into one skin, with the joins kept away from faces and the event title.
Get the frame size before the design
The most common backdrop problem is a print that does not match the frame. Before anything is designed, get the exact frame or truss size from your decorator, tent vendor or venue. Ask how the backdrop will be fixed: eyelets tied to the pipes, a pocket on top for a pipe, or Velcro. The flex is finished to match.
Measure the frame inside and outside. Some decorators want the flex wrapped around the pipes, which needs extra margin on every side.
Designing for photos and stage lights
A backdrop is seen mostly through cameras. That changes a few design rules:
- Keep the event title and logos in the upper half. People standing on stage or in front of a photo wall cover the bottom third.
- Leave the centre clear of busy detail on a stage backdrop. That is where the speaker stands, and clutter behind a head looks messy in photos.
- Avoid shiny finishes. Stage lights and camera flash bounce off gloss and leave white patches. Matt or low-sheen flex photographs better.
- On a logo wall, size the logos so at least two show clearly in a head-and-shoulders photo.
- Very dark backgrounds can swallow people’s outlines in photos, especially if they wear dark clothes. Medium tones are safer.
Backdrops for occasions in Pune
Corporate conferences and annual days need clean stage backdrops with sponsor logos; see event banner printing. Wedding families order photo walls, haldi and mehendi backdrops and sangeet stage panels; the wedding banner page has ideas. Birthday parties at home and in halls use themed backdrops with the child’s name and photo; see birthday banners. During Ganeshotsav and Navratri, mandals put up large stage and decoration backdrops; see festival banners.
Indoor and outdoor events
Indoors, in a hall or hotel ballroom, the backdrop only has to look good under lights. Outdoors, on a lawn or open ground, wind is the risk. A large backdrop tied loosely to a frame acts like a sail, so it needs ties at close intervals, weighted bases and, in the monsoon months, a frame that is properly braced. Ask your decorator to plan for wind if the event is outdoors between June and September.
Plan backwards from the event date
Backdrops are almost always tied to a fixed date, and late changes are common: a sponsor logo arrives late, a name spelling changes. Send the design early so there is time for corrections on the proof. Once you approve, the print is scheduled and the ready time is confirmed on WhatsApp. Urgent backdrops are possible depending on size and the queue, but it is better not to rely on it during wedding season or the festival rush.
Sponsor strips
Events with several sponsors often put a strip of logos along the bottom or sides of the stage backdrop. Ask sponsors for vector logos early, and decide the order before the design starts. Logos sent as small images from a website look blurred when blown up to backdrop size, and chasing better files the night before is stressful.
After the event
Many organisers reuse backdrops. A neutral logo wall or a mandal backdrop without a date can come out again next year. Roll it printed side out, keep it dry, and it will be ready for the next event.
Ordering a backdrop
Share the frame size, how it is fixed, the event date and your design or content on WhatsApp. You get the price and a proof, and printing waits for your approval. Collect the finished backdrop at Chandni Chowk or have it delivered to the venue in Pune or PCMC; fixing can be arranged. A quote can also be requested through this form.
