If a sticker will be washed, touched, wiped, rained on or left in the sun, vinyl is the right base.
Shapes and cutting
How a sticker is cut changes how it looks and how easy it is to use:
- Square or rectangle cut: the simplest. Good for notices, labels and window panels.
- Cut to shape (contour cut): the blade follows the outline of the logo or artwork, often with a small white border. Good for logo stickers and bike or laptop stickers.
- Kiss-cut on a sheet: many stickers cut through the vinyl but not the backing, so they peel off one by one from a sheet. Handy for giveaways and packaging.
- Cut lettering: plain coloured vinyl cut into letters with no background at all, for door names and glass timings. This is covered more on the vinyl printing page.
For a cut-to-shape sticker, send the logo as a vector (CDR, AI, PDF or SVG). The cutter follows the outline in the file, so a blurry JPG edge gives a blurry cut.
White or transparent sticker?
White vinyl shows colours exactly as designed and hides whatever is underneath. Transparent vinyl lets the surface show through around the design, which looks clean on glass, bottles and clear packaging. The catch with transparent stickers is that light colours like yellow or pale grey almost vanish on them, especially on dark glass. If your design has white text, it needs white ink or a different approach; ask before choosing transparent.

Are vinyl stickers waterproof?
The vinyl itself is waterproof. For printed stickers that face regular rain, sun or cleaning, a laminate on top protects the ink from scratches and fading. Bike and car stickers, bathroom and kitchen labels, and outdoor glass stickers all benefit from lamination. Indoor stickers on a dry wall can usually skip it.
Putting a sticker on without bubbles
- Clean the surface with water or spirit and let it dry. Dust and grease are the main reason stickers lift.
- For larger stickers, peel back only a strip of backing first, line it up, then peel the rest as you smooth.
- Smooth from the centre outwards with a card or squeegee.
- On glass, a light spray of soapy water lets you slide the sticker into place before pressing it down. Not for paper-backed or cut lettering.

Designing a sticker that reads
Small stickers are read from close up, window stickers from a few steps away. In both cases, contrast matters more than decoration. Dark text on a light sticker, or white text on a strong colour, stays readable; mid-grey on beige does not. Give a cut-to-shape sticker a simple outline: spiky edges and thin points can lift when the sticker is handled. For a sticker that goes on the inside of glass and is read from outside, the print must be reversed, so say where it will be fixed.
