Most people choose a stretched canvas. It looks clean from the side, has no glass to reflect light, and is light enough to hang on a single nail or hook.
What to do with the edges
On a stretched canvas, an inch or so of the print wraps around the sides of the frame. There are three ways to handle that:
- Image wrap: the picture continues round the sides. Works for landscapes and textures, but anything near the edge ends up on the side, so keep faces and text well in.
- Mirror wrap: the edge of the picture is reflected onto the sides, so the full image stays on the front.
- Colour edge: the sides are a plain colour such as black or white. Neat and modern.
For a portrait or a family photo, a mirror wrap or plain colour edge is the safer choice. With an image wrap, someone standing at the edge of the photo may end up around the corner.
