Star flex is a premium grade of frontlit flex: heavier and smoother than normal flex, so colours print deeper and fine text stays crisp. Pune shopkeepers and clinics choose star flex printing for boards that must look good for months, not days. 3 Red Media prints it at Chandni Chowk and can supply it stretched on a frame or ready for your fabricator.
Star flex vs normal flex: what you actually see
Put the two side by side and the difference is obvious from a few feet away. Normal flex has a slightly textured surface and colours look a little flat. Star flex has a tighter, smoother face, so blacks look blacker, reds look richer and small text has cleaner edges.
| Point | Normal flex | Star flex |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Lighter, thinner sheet | Heavier, stiffer sheet |
| Surface | Visible texture | Smooth, close weave |
| Colour | Good from a distance | Deeper, sharper even up close |
| Typical life | Events and short campaigns | Permanent and long-running boards |
| Best match | Banners tied with eyelets | Boards stretched on a frame |
The name is a trade term used across India, not a brand, so the exact grade can vary from one supplier to the next. What stays the same is the purpose: a better-looking frontlit flex for work that stays up.
When star flex is worth choosing
Star flex costs more than the standard grade, and it is not always needed. A one-day birthday banner does not need it. A board above a pharmacy on Paud Road that customers look at every day does. Choose star flex for:
- Shop fascia boards where the name has to look clean and professional. See sign board printing for frame and box options.
- Clinic and hospital boards with doctor names, timings and departments that people read closely. The hospital signage page covers this.
- Office and showroom boards carrying a logo whose colours must match brand guidelines.
- Builder hoardings on sites that run for many months, where the project image has to sell. See real estate hoardings.
- Restaurant and café fronts with food photos, which look noticeably better on a smoother surface.
Sizing a star flex board
Star flex boards are almost always fitted to a frame, so size has to match the frame exactly. Measure the frame from outer edge to outer edge, width first. If you are getting a new frame made, decide the frame size first and print to that.
| Board | Common sizes (ft) | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Small shop or clinic | 6 × 2, 8 × 3 | 12 to 24 sq ft |
| Standard shop fascia | 10 × 3, 10 × 4, 12 × 4 | 30 to 48 sq ft |
| Showroom or wide frontage | 16 × 4, 20 × 5 | 64 to 100 sq ft |
When the board is printed for wrapping around a frame, a few inches of extra flex are left on every side so it can be pulled round and fixed at the back. Tell us whether the size you give is the visible face or the full frame, and the margin will be added correctly.
Stretching and fixing
Star flex looks its best pulled tight. A wrinkled board loses all the advantage of the smoother surface. On a wooden frame, the flex is pulled round the edges and stapled or nailed at the back. On a metal frame, it is usually laced or clipped. Either way, work from the middle of each side outwards so the tension is even.
Re-tighten a framed board after the first heavy rain of the monsoon. Wet flex and swelling wood can loosen the stretch.
Sun, rain and fading
No flex is immune to the sun. A board facing south or west takes the hardest light through the Pune summer, and strong reds and yellows usually fade first. Star flex holds colour better than normal flex, but how long any board lasts depends on exposure, frame quality and dust. If your frontage takes direct afternoon sun, keep that in mind when choosing colours: dark text on a light background stays readable even as it ages.
Designing so the better surface shows
Star flex rewards a design that uses it. On normal flex, fine lines, small print and subtle gradients tend to get lost; on star flex they hold up. That opens a few choices that would be wasted on cheaper material:
- Real photographs: a dish, a product, a building elevation, a doctor’s portrait.
- A logo in its exact brand colours, including deep blues and reds that look muddy on rough flex.
- A second line of smaller text, such as a tagline or speciality, that people read when they come closer.
Send logos as vector files (CDR, AI or PDF) so edges print clean, and photos at the largest size you have. If your logo exists only as a small image from WhatsApp, say so, and it can be checked on the proof before anything is printed.
Star flex at night
Star flex is frontlit, so at night it needs a light shining on it, such as a lamp or spotlight above the board. If you want the board to glow from inside, that is a different material. Read backlit flex for glow sign boxes to compare.
Ordering star flex
Send the frame size and your design, or just the shop name, logo and the details you want on the board. You receive a price and a proof on WhatsApp, and printing happens only after you approve. The ready time depends on size and current work and is confirmed on WhatsApp. Pick it up at Chandni Chowk or have it delivered; fitting can be arranged. Or use the quote form.
