Hospital signage printing covers the signs that get patients to the right counter without asking, the boards that name each department, the frosted film on glass that keeps consultations private, and the banners outside that tell the neighbourhood you are open. 3 Red Media prints these at its own unit in Chandni Chowk, Pune, for hospitals, nursing homes, multi-speciality clinics, dental and physiotherapy clinics and diagnostic labs.
People who walk into a hospital are often anxious, unwell or in a hurry. Good signage lowers that stress. So the rules here are different from shop branding: clarity first, branding second.
Where each print goes in a hospital or clinic
| Area | Material | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside / main road | Name board, specialities list, emergency sign | Star flex or backlit flex in a glow box | Must read at night for emergencies |
| Entrance and lobby | Directory board with floors and departments | Vinyl on sunboard, laminated | Wipeable and easy to update floor by floor |
| Corridors | Arrow signs, room numbers, washroom and lift signs | Laminated vinyl on sunboard | Light, wall-fixed, cleaned with the walls |
| Consultation rooms, ICU, labs | Glass privacy bands, department names on glass | Frosted glass film, plain or with cut lettering | Privacy without blocking daylight |
| Waiting areas | Awareness posters, health tips, payment and insurance info | Laminated vinyl or sunboard | Changed often, so keep them modular |
| Opening / camps | Inauguration banner, free check-up camp banner | Flex with eyelets | Short-term, outdoor |
Materials that can be cleaned
Inside a clinic, signs are wiped along with walls and doors. Bare printed surfaces can lose ink when wiped with cleaning solutions over time. Ask for lamination on indoor signs in patient areas. It gives a smooth surface that can be wiped regularly, and it protects the print from scratches from trolleys and wheelchairs.
Avoid fabric or paper posters in treatment areas. They collect dust and cannot be wiped. Laminated vinyl on sunboard or vinyl stuck directly on a smooth wall works better.
Wayfinding that patients actually follow
- Use the words patients use. “X-Ray” is clearer than “Radiology” for many visitors; you can show both.
- Show the language mix your patients read. Many Pune clinics use Marathi and English together, and some add Hindi.
- Put a sign at every decision point: lift lobby, corridor junction, stairs landing.
- Give each department a colour and use it on the directory, the arrows and the door sign.
- Keep the emergency sign the most visible sign on the building, lit at night.
- Lettering height: a rough rule is 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of reading distance.
Walk the route a first-time patient takes, from gate to billing to pharmacy, and note every place you would hesitate. Each of those spots needs a sign.
Frosted glass for privacy
Glass partitions make small clinics feel open, but patients do not want to be seen during a consultation. Frosted film applied in a band at seated and standing eye level gives privacy and still lets light through. Department names, the clinic logo or a pattern can be cut into the film so the glass also works as a sign.
Clinic flex boards and opening banners
A small clinic’s main board often doubles as its advertising. Keep it simple: the clinic name, the doctor’s name and qualifications as registered, specialities and timings. A glow board with backlit flex keeps the clinic visible after dark when many patients come after work.
Medical practice has its own advertising rules for doctors, set by the medical regulator. Keep claims factual and check with your professional body if you are unsure what may be printed. We print what you approve; the content decisions are yours.
Opening a new clinic: a print list
| Before opening | Opening week | After opening |
|---|---|---|
| Outside name board and timings | Opening banner on the building | Awareness posters for the waiting room |
| Door signs for each room | Standee at reception with services | Health camp banners when you run one |
| Frosted film on consultation glass | Directional signs from the road or parking | Updated timing boards when doctors change |
Doing the permanent signs before the opening means painters and electricians are not working around a finished board. The temporary opening banners can then go up a day or two before the first patient.
For larger hospitals, keep a master list of every sign with its location, size and wording. When a department moves or a doctor joins, you update the list and reprint only the signs that changed, instead of guessing which boards are out of date.
