A printed sign board is the name board above or beside a shop, clinic or office, made by printing the design on flex or vinyl and fixing it to a frame, a board or a light box. For most Pune shops, sign board printing is the most affordable way to get a clean, colourful fascia that can be changed later. 3 Red Media prints sign boards at Chandni Chowk and helps you pick the build that suits your frontage.
Four common ways to build a printed shop board
| Build | How it is made | Good for | Night visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flex on a frame | Frontlit or star flex stretched on a wooden or metal frame | Most shops, quick and easy to replace | Needs a lamp in front |
| Vinyl on sunboard | Printed vinyl stuck on PVC foam board | Indoor boards, small boards under a canopy | Needs room lighting |
| Vinyl on ACP | Printed or cut vinyl applied to an aluminium composite panel | Neat, rigid fascia with a flat finish | Needs a lamp in front |
| Glow sign box | Backlit flex stretched over a box with lights inside | Pharmacies, clinics, restaurants, shops open late | Glows on its own |
The print is the part 3 Red Media makes. The frame, ACP panel or light box can be an existing one, made by your fabricator, or arranged along with the print. Tell us what you already have.
The Marathi name board rule in Maharashtra
Shops and establishments in Maharashtra are required by state law to display their name board in Marathi, written in Devanagari script. The Marathi name can sit alongside English or another language, but it should not be in a smaller font than the other script. The rule applies across the state, and municipal bodies have carried out drives to enforce it.
In practice, this means laying out your board with the Marathi name as a main element, not a small line at the bottom. When you send your shop name, send the Marathi spelling too if you have one you prefer. If not, a Devanagari version can be set on the proof for you to check. Rules and enforcement details change, so confirm the current position with your ward office or the shop act office.
Check the Marathi spelling on the proof carefully, ideally with someone who writes Marathi daily. A spelling mistake on a permanent board is the most common reason for reprinting.
What to put on a shop sign board
A fascia board is read from across the road in a couple of seconds. Fit too much and nothing gets read. A board usually needs:
- The shop name in Marathi, and in English or another language if you want.
- What you sell or do, in two to four words (“Medical & General Stores”, “Dental Clinic”).
- A logo if you have one.
- Optionally, one phone number. Long lists of services belong on a side board or the glass.
Leave timings, offers and service lists for vinyl stickers on the glass or a small side board.
Measuring your frontage
Measure the space above the shutter or entrance, width first, then height. If there is an existing frame, measure the frame. Most Pune shop boards fall between 8 and 16 ft wide and 3 to 4 ft tall. Corner shops often add a second board on the side wall, and a projecting double-sided glow sign helps a shop get noticed by traffic coming from either direction.
| Frontage | Typical board (ft) |
|---|---|
| Single small shop | 8 × 3 |
| Standard shop | 10 × 3 or 10 × 4 |
| Double shutter | 16 × 4 or 20 × 4 |
| Projecting glow sign | 3 × 2 or 4 × 2, double-sided |
Which build to choose
If you are open late, a glow sign is worth it, because a lit board is noticed from vehicles after dark. If you change offers or branding often, flex on a frame is easy and cheap to re-skin. If the board sits under a deep canopy or inside a mall, vinyl on sunboard looks neat without the bulk. Clinics, pharmacies and opticians often combine a glow sign above with vinyl lettering on the glass.
Shop boards by business
Different businesses have different needs. Clinics and hospitals need doctor names, specialities and timings that read clearly; see hospital and clinic signage. Restaurants and cafés want food imagery and a name that glows at night. Retail shops of all kinds are covered on the shop branding page, which includes glass, counter and inside graphics.
Weather and upkeep
A board facing west takes the full afternoon sun through April and May, and colours fade fastest there. In the monsoon, check that the flex is tight and the frame drains water. Dust from traffic dulls boards on main roads, so a wipe every few weeks keeps them bright. When a board fades, you usually only need a new print on the same frame.
Boards that change with the business
Shops evolve. A mobile shop adds repairs, a clinic adds a second doctor, a kirana store becomes a supermarket. With a printed board, the change is a new skin or a new vinyl panel, not a whole new structure. Keep your board file safe after the first order, so the next version starts from the same layout and colours.
Ordering a sign board
Send the board size, a photo of your frontage, the shop name in Marathi and English, and any logo. You get the price and a proof on WhatsApp, and printing begins after your approval. Ready time depends on size and queue and is confirmed with you. Pick up from Chandni Chowk or get it delivered, and fixing can be arranged. You can also fill in the quote form.
