A vinyl banner is a printed sheet of PVC vinyl that is hemmed along the edges and fitted with eyelets so it can be tied or hung. People in Pune use the word banner for flex as well, so the first job is to settle which material you actually want. 3 Red Media prints vinyl banners at its own unit in Chandni Chowk and will tell you plainly when a cheaper flex banner would do the same work.
Vinyl banner or flex banner: what is the difference?
Both are PVC, but they are built differently. Flex is a coated mesh of fabric and PVC, thick and stiff, made for big outdoor jobs. Vinyl banner material is a smoother, more flexible film that takes finer detail and sits better on a wall or a stand. The full comparison is on the flex vs vinyl page; the short version is in the table.
| Point | Vinyl banner | Flex banner |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Smooth, slightly glossy or matt | Textured, a little coarse |
| Handling | Folds and rolls easily | Stiff, creases if folded tight |
| Fine detail and photos | Sharper at close range | Fine for distance viewing |
| Best location | Indoor, exhibition, stage, short outdoor runs | Roadside boards, long outdoor display |
| Wind | Needs more support in strong wind | Handles tension and wind better |
| Typical user | Events, showrooms, offices, launches | Hoardings, shop boards, campaigns |
If the banner will hang for months on an open road in monsoon wind, flex is usually the safer pick: see flex printing and banner printing. If it will be seen from a few feet away, indoors or on a stage, vinyl gives you the cleaner picture.
Where vinyl banners work best
- Indoor events and launches: product launches, seminars, college fests, where people stand close and read the print.
- Exhibition stands: hanging banners and back walls that go up, come down and travel. See exhibition stall printing.
- Shop interiors: offer banners, menu headers, wall hangings above counters.
- Short outdoor runs: a weekend sale, a society function, a match day, where the banner is up for days, not seasons.
- Birthdays and family functions: photo banners with names and pictures that need to look crisp. See birthday banners.
Hemming, eyelets and pockets
Finishing decides how long a banner survives. An unhemmed edge frays and tears from the eyelet outwards, especially in wind.
- Hemming: the edge is folded back and heat-sealed or stitched, giving a double layer where the eyelets sit. Ask for hemmed edges on every outdoor banner.
- Eyelets: metal rings punched at the corners and along the edges. For a 6 ft wide banner, one every 1 to 2 ft is a sensible gap; closer spacing holds better in wind.
- Pockets: a sewn sleeve at the top and bottom so a pipe or pole can slide through. Good for stage banners that must hang flat.
- Rope or tie points: tell us how you will fix it (to a railing, a frame, a wall) and we will finish it to match.
For outdoor vinyl banners in Pune’s monsoon, cut small wind slits or choose mesh, and fix the banner on all four sides. A banner tied at two corners will flap and tear.
Indoor and outdoor vinyl banners
Indoors the banner only has to look good and hang straight, so a lighter material and a plain hem are enough. Outdoors it has to survive sun, rain and wind. Summer sun on a south or west wall fades colour faster, and monsoon wind finds every loose edge. Tell us where it will hang and for how long; the material, hem and eyelet spacing are chosen to match. Banners meant for roadsides may also need ward office permission, covered on the banner permission page.
Sizes people ask for
| Size | Common use |
|---|---|
| 2 x 3 ft | Table banner, counter display, small shop sign |
| 3 x 5 ft | Small event, shop front header, society notice |
| 4 x 6 ft | Gate or wall banner, class or clinic |
| 3 x 8 ft | Entrance header, stage side banner |
| 4 x 10 ft | Shop frontage, small stage backdrop |
| 6 x 10 ft and above | Event backdrop, exhibition wall, outdoor display |
Any size is possible within the width of the roll; wider banners are joined with a neat seam. The banner size guide helps match size to viewing distance. As a rule of thumb, text should be about one inch tall for every 10 ft of viewing distance.
Designing a vinyl banner that reads
Use big, high-contrast lettering, one main message and a logo. A banner is read in two seconds. Send artwork as a PDF, CDR or high-resolution image at the final size or in proportion; the artwork guide explains file formats. Keep names and phone numbers away from the edges, because hems and eyelets take about an inch.
Common mistakes with vinyl banners
- Ordering the wrong material for the wall: a vinyl banner stretched over an uneven wall shows every bump. Hang it on a frame or a flat surface.
- No wind plan: a large outdoor banner behaves like a sail. Spread eyelets, fix all sides, and keep the bottom edge tight.
- Low-resolution files: a small web image enlarged to 6 ft looks blurred. Ask for the original file instead of a screenshot.
- Text too close to the edge: hemming and eyelets use about an inch, so a phone number placed there gets lost.
For a tall standing display instead of a hanging banner, a roll-up is easier to carry; see standee printing. For a rigid board that does not sag, vinyl can be mounted on sunboard, covered on the sunboard printing page.
Reusing and storing a banner
Vinyl banners roll up without creasing if they are rolled print-side out around a wide tube. Avoid folding, and keep the roll away from heat and damp. A banner for a repeat event, such as a yearly society function, can be reused for several seasons if it is stored this way and the dates are not printed on it.
How to order
Send the size, quantity and design on WhatsApp, or fill the quote form and upload the file. A rate and a digital proof come back; nothing is printed until you approve it. Banners are printed at Chandni Chowk, finished, and either collected or delivered across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Urgent jobs are possible depending on size and queue, and the ready time is confirmed on WhatsApp.
