Shop Board Ideas: 15 Layouts for Small Shops That Read Well

Fifteen shop board layouts for small shops, how to arrange name, logo and service, colours that read from across the road, the Marathi name rule, vinyl, flex or glow boards, and mistakes to avoid.

Good shop board ideas start with one rule: the shop name must be readable from across the road in two seconds. Below are 15 layouts, from a name-only board to a lit glow box, and each says which kind of shop it suits and what to watch for. Most small shops need only two or three of them.

A board is read by someone walking or riding past, so size, contrast and a short message matter more than decoration. A handy check is 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance. The sign board printing page covers how each layout is built.

What are good shop board ideas for a small shop?

  1. Name only, centred. One big name on a plain colour and nothing else. It suits shops whose name already says the trade, such as a surname followed by Medical. A bare surname tells strangers nothing.
  2. Name plus trade line. A large name with two to four words beneath, such as Mobile Sales and Service. This is the workhorse for kirana stores, tailors and salons.
  3. Logo left, name right. Works on wide boards of 12 ft and more, with the logo as tall as the board. Only worth it if the logo is bold and simple.
  4. Logo above name. A stacked layout for tall or square faces, such as a side-wall board on a corner shop.
  5. Marathi over English. Two lines with the Marathi first, at the same size or larger. It is the cleanest way to meet the language rule on a mid-width board.
  6. Marathi and English side by side. Suits very wide boards. Put the Marathi at the left, since the rule wants it at the beginning.
  7. Picture strip. Two or three sharp photos or icons along one end of the board, for bakeries, sweet shops and fruit stalls. More than three turns into clutter.
  8. Symbol first. A cross, scissors, key or pair of spectacles at the left, so the trade is known before the name is read. Good for medical stores, opticians and locksmiths.
  9. Service columns. The name on top and four to six services in two columns below, for clinics, repair shops and print shops. The board needs a height of at least 4 ft.
  10. Colour blocks. One panel in a brand colour carrying the logo and another carrying the name. It stands out in a row of look-alike shops.
  11. Light on dark. White or yellow letters on deep blue, green or maroon. It reads well in daylight and glows when lit, but a dark board on a dim lane vanishes without light.
  12. Dark on light. Black or navy letters on white or pale yellow. It is the easiest to read in daylight and the easiest to photograph, though pale boards show dirt.
  13. Glow box. Backlit flex over lights inside a box, so the letters shine on their own. It suits pharmacies, restaurants and any shop open after dark, and it needs power and a sealed, drained box.
  14. Projecting blade sign. A small double-sided board at right angles to the shop front, seen from both directions along a lane. It needs a fixing that can take wind.
  15. Board plus glass echo. A simple board above, and the same name and logo repeated in cut vinyl on the door glass, so the shop is recognised from the pavement as well as the road. The shop branding page covers the glass.

How should the shop name, logo and service be arranged?

The reading order is name, trade, logo, then contact details. The table applies the 1-inch rule to common board sizes. To use it for your own shop, pace out the distance from the far pavement in feet and divide by 10 to get the smallest letter height in inches.

10 x 3 ft12 in5 inabout 120 ft

Keep a clear margin all round. A logo pushed against the border makes the board look cramped, and a name with room around it reads as one unit.

Which colours stand out on a shop board?

Contrast beats colour. What carries across a road is the difference in lightness between the letters and the ground, not the hue.

CombinationReads from afar?Note
Black on yellowVery wellTraffic-sign contrast, plain and strong
White on deep blue, green or maroonVery wellGlows when lit, dim without light
Black or navy on whiteWellClean in daylight, shows dirt
Red on green, orange on red, pastel on whitePoorlyBlurs at a distance

Roughly one man in twelve has some red-green colour blindness, so a board that relies on telling those two colours apart will fail for some readers. Keep to two colours plus black or white, and view the proof in black and white: if the name still reads, the contrast is right. Reds and yellows fade first in Pune’s sun, so a board facing west or south may need its reprint sooner.

What should be on the board besides the name?

Less than most owners think. A board is read in two seconds, so it carries the name, a trade line of two to four words and a logo if you have one. A phone number is optional and goes in smaller type. If the shop is registered for GST, Rule 18 of the CGST Rules requires the GSTIN on the name board at the entrance, and a thin strip along the bottom holds it. Long service lists, dated offers and a row of phone numbers belong on the glass or a side board. Opening hours and payment signs such as UPI belong on the door glass, where people already look for them.

How do I add a Marathi name to a shop board?

Maharashtra law asks for it. Section 36A of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, inserted in 2022, says the name board must be in Marathi in Devanagari script, with the Marathi lettering at the beginning and in a font no smaller than any other language. Other languages may be added alongside, and a place that serves liquor cannot name its board after legends or forts. This follows the text as reproduced by SCC Online, so confirm current enforcement with your ward office or the shop act office.

Give the printer the Marathi spelling typed out in Devanagari, not a photo of a card. Have a Marathi reader go through the proof letter by letter, because a missing matra on a permanent board is an expensive fix. Stacked layouts put the Marathi on the first line, and wide boards put it at the left.

Vinyl board, flex board or glow board: which idea fits?

BuildFitsAt night
Vinyl on ACPA flat, neat fascia in the openNeeds a lamp in front
Flex on a frameWide boards and quick reprintsNeeds a lamp in front
Glow box with backlit flexShops open after darkGlows on its own
Vinyl on sunboardSmall boards under a canopy or inside a mallNeeds room light

A shop board with light can be a glow box, lit from inside, or a normal board with lamps aimed at it from above. Space the lamps evenly, since gaps show up as bright and dark bands. The backlit flex page explains the glow box face, and sunboard printing covers the small boards that live under canopies.

What mistakes make shop boards hard to read?

  • Too many words. Past seven or eight, nothing gets read.
  • A thin or fancy script for the name. Hairlines vanish in sun and at distance.
  • Low contrast, such as grey on beige or gold on cream.
  • Letters crowded against the border.
  • Letters printed over a busy photograph, which breaks the name up.
  • A phone number set bigger than the shop name.
  • A board hidden by a canopy, a tree or the neighbour’s board.
  • A gloss face that mirrors the street in afternoon sun.
  • Marathi spelling nobody checked.

Stand across the road, squint, and read the board in two seconds. What you cannot read, a customer will not read either.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are good shop board ideas for a small shop?

Keep it simple: a large name, a trade line of two to four words and a logo, in two high-contrast colours. Common layouts are name only, name plus trade line, logo and name side by side, Marathi over English, and a glow box for shops open after dark. Check the board from across the road before you order.

What makes a good shop name board design?

Contrast, size and a short message. The name should be readable from across the road in two seconds, with letters about 1 inch tall for every 10 feet of viewing distance. Use two colours, leave space around the logo and set the Marathi name first.

How do I get a shop board with light for night visibility?

Use a glow box, where backlit flex is lit from inside, or aim evenly spaced lamps at a normal board from above. A glow box shows on its own after dark but needs power and a sealed, drained box. Have a licensed electrician check the wiring.

Is the Marathi name compulsory on a shop board in Pune?

Yes. Section 36A of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, added in 2022, requires the name board in Marathi in Devanagari script, with the Marathi lettering at the beginning and not smaller than other languages. Confirm current enforcement with your ward office.

Do I have to show my GST number on the shop board?

If you are registered under GST, Rule 18 of the CGST Rules requires the GSTIN on the name board at the entrance of each place of business. A thin strip along the bottom of the board is enough. Check with your accountant.

Which colours are best for a shop name board?

High contrast: black on yellow, white on deep blue, green or maroon, or black on white. Avoid red on green and pastel on white, which blur at a distance. Stick to two colours plus black or white.
