The LED sign board vs vinyl board choice comes down to when your customers see the shop. An LED board makes its own light, so it reads at night and from a distance, but it needs power and repairs. A vinyl board is a printed face on a panel or frame: cheap to run, easy to change, readable in daylight and dark after sunset unless it is lit or backlit.
Shop owners use these words loosely, so the sections below say what each build is before they compare visibility, cost, safety and weather.

What is the difference between an LED sign board and a vinyl board?
In Pune shop talk, a vinyl board is printed film stuck on sunboard, ACP or a frame. An LED board is built with its own light sources: cut letters or panels with LED modules inside. Between them sits the glow box, which lights printed backlit flex from behind.
| Build | How it is made | Lit by | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed vinyl on sunboard or ACP | Printed film pasted on a rigid panel | Nothing of its own | Fascias under a canopy, indoor and mall boards |
| Flex board on a frame | Printed flex stretched on a frame | A lamp in front, if any | Wide shop fronts, quick changes |
| Glow sign box | Backlit flex over tubes or LED modules in a box | Lights inside the box | Medical stores, clinics, restaurants |
| LED letter or panel board | Cut letters or panels with LED modules built in | The LEDs themselves | Showrooms, jewellers, brand names |
3 Red Media prints the faces in the first three rows at Chandni Chowk, Pune. LED letters are built by sign fabricators, which is why this guide compares the two without pushing either.
Which is more visible at night?
LED wins on raw night visibility. Self-lit letters stay sharp across a wide road, and a lit name reads over street clutter. A glow box comes close, because the whole face lights evenly and dark letters on a pale background are easy to read after dark.

A plain vinyl or flex board has no light of its own. It is only as visible as the street lamp, headlights or a lamp aimed at it, which is fine for a shop that shuts by 7 pm and poor for a pharmacy open until midnight. Reflective vinyl catches headlights, which helps on a highway-facing board, but it will not light a footpath.
Which costs more to run and maintain?
Think in cost per year, not price per board: the purchase price spread over the years you will use it, plus power, repairs and the cost of changing the design. Vinyl and flex are cheap to buy and to re-skin, and they have no electrical parts. LED costs more to build and then keeps costing.
| Cost line | LED board | Vinyl or flex board |
|---|---|---|
| Making it | Fabrication plus electricals | Printing plus a frame or panel |
| Running | Power every evening | Nothing, unless a lamp lights it |
| Repairs | Power supplies, modules, seals, wiring | Re-fixing a loose corner |
| Changing the name or offer | New letters or panels | A new print on the same frame |
| Fading | Letters hold colour, faces can yellow | Printed colour fades in sun and is reprinted |
Power is easy to estimate. A 100-watt board lit for 12 hours a day uses 1.2 units a day, about 36 units a month, and you multiply that by your commercial tariff. Repairs are harder to predict. The power supply is often the first part to fail, so ask a fabricator what is covered and for how long.

Which suits a small shop front better?
Start from your trading hours, not the trend. A tailor, kirana or clothes shop that closes in the evening gets most of its value from a daytime board, and a printed one is enough. A medical store, restaurant or mobile shop open late needs a lit board, and a glow box gives that with a printed skin you can replace.
| Your situation | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| Closes by early evening | Printed vinyl or flex board |
| Open late on a modest budget | Glow box with backlit flex |
| Open late, showroom or brand-led | LED letters, possibly over a printed panel |
| Deep canopy or narrow lane | A lit board, tried from across the street first |
Two more checks: the canopy and the Marathi name. A deep canopy can hide a lit board from the road, so stand across the street and see what a customer sees. Maharashtra’s shops law, as amended in 2022, also asks for the name board in Marathi in Devanagari, and joined letters with matras are usually simpler to print than to build as separate LED letters. The sign board printing page covers the rule, and the glass and counter prints that go with a board are under shop branding.

What about power cuts and electrical safety?
A power cut turns an LED board off, so the name disappears just when the street is dark too. A printed board is no worse off than before. If evening trade matters, ask the fabricator about a backup supply.
Safety matters more than the cut. Outdoor boards need weatherproof fittings, proper earthing and a protective breaker, fitted and checked by a licensed electrician. Water in a power supply or a joint is the usual start of a short circuit.
A hanging or projecting board is also a falling weight in a storm, so the fixing matters as much as the wiring. Large, lit or projecting boards can come under civic sky-sign rules too, so ask your ward office before ordering.
Can I mix vinyl and LED lighting?
Yes, and it is often the sensible middle path. Printed vinyl on an ACP or sunboard panel can be lit by an LED strip or a spotlight above or below it, so the print stays cheap to change and the light does the night work. A glow box with backlit flex is the other common mix. Space the lights evenly, because gaps show as bright and dark bands across the face.
Which one lasts longer in Pune weather?
Different parts age at different speeds. Printed colour fades in strong sun, first on boards facing south or west, and a faded print is simply replaced on the same frame; flex vs vinyl compares the two materials. LED modules are often rated for tens of thousands of hours, but the power supply, seals and wiring tend to fail sooner, and monsoon damp is hardest on them. A board under a canopy ages slower, whichever kind it is.
Tell us your trading hours and send a frontage photo through the quote form, and the proof can show a printed face for the board you choose, lit or unlit.
