A no parking board has to be readable from the driver’s seat before the car stops. For a society gate or compound wall, that usually means a panel of about 2 × 1.5 ft or larger, with two short lines in English and Marathi, printed on vinyl and fixed to a rigid board. Permission depends on where it stands: your own premises need your society’s or landlord’s approval, but no-parking zones on public roads are for the traffic police to declare.
Most boards fail for dull reasons: letters too small for the distance, a flex sheet that flaps loose in the first monsoon wind, or a board nobody had the right to put up.

What size should a no parking board be?
The size of a no parking board follows reading distance. Sign makers often start from one inch of letter height for every ten feet, so a driver who must read the board 40 feet before the gate needs letters about 4 inches tall.
| Where it goes | Board size | Letter height |
|---|---|---|
| Basement pillar, stilt wall | 12 × 8 in or 18 × 12 in | 1.5 to 2 in |
| Inner gate, compound wall | 2 × 1.5 ft or 2 × 2 ft | 3 to 4 in |
| Road-facing gate, shopfront | 3 × 2 ft | 4 to 5 in |
| Large yard or factory gate | 4 × 3 ft or bigger | 6 in or more |
The look can help as well. The Indian road sign code, IRC:67, draws No Parking as a blue circle with a red border and one red diagonal bar. Borrowing that symbol tells drivers the message before they read a word.
What wording works on a no parking board in Marathi and English?
Short wording beats stern wording. Two words in large letters carry the message, and one smaller line says who the rule is for.

- Plain ban: No Parking, or नो पार्किंग
- Full sentence: Do not park here, or येथे वाहने उभी करू नयेत
- Residents only: फक्त रहिवाशांसाठी
- Private land: Private property, or खाजगी जागा
The Maharashtra government’s online Marathi dictionary lists वाहने उभी करू नयेत for no parking, and नो पार्किंग is the form seen on most boards and in news reports. Ask someone who writes Marathi every day to check the proof, because a wrong letter on a permanent board means a reprint.
Skip threats you cannot back up. A fine amount or a towing warning on a private board starts arguments unless your society’s general body has approved it, so a calm line such as “Gate in use, please keep clear” often works better.

Which material lasts outdoors: vinyl on ACP, sunboard or flex?
In Pune the monsoon decides the material more than anything else. Wind-driven rain finds every loose edge, and a flex sheet that flaps for three months will not look new in September.
| Build | Outdoor life in Pune | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl on ACP | Longest; handles sun and rain | Gates, compound walls, road side |
| Vinyl on sunboard | Short in the open, fine under a roof | Basement, stilt parking, covered entrance |
| Flex on a frame | Seasonal; wind tears the eyelets | Event days, fenced plots |
Laminate the vinyl if the board will meet sun, and ask about a reflective border for unlit lanes, so headlights pick the board out at night. Sunboard builds are described under sunboard printing, flex and ACP under sign board printing, and the print itself is ordinary vinyl printing.

Where can a society put no parking boards?
Put each no parking board where the problem starts, not where the wall is convenient. The usual spots:
- The gate, facing approaching traffic, so a visitor stops before blocking the swing.
- The basement ramp, where one badly parked car blocks everyone.
- The bin and garbage-van bay, which needs clear space for the vehicle to turn.
- Water-tanker and generator bays, where access matters more than convenience.
Face each board towards oncoming vehicles, not along the wall, so it is read head-on.
Does a no parking board need permission?
- Inside a society compound: the general body or managing committee decides, under the society’s bye-laws. The Maharashtra model bye-laws leave parking rules to the general body, so keep the resolution that approves your board.
- On private shop or office land: the landlord or owner, in writing if you rent.
- On the road, a footpath, a pole or a public wall: only the traffic police can declare a no-parking zone, and a sign on public property can itself need permission.
Pune orders reported by Pune Pulse come from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) under the Motor Vehicles Act, and the PMC Public Parking Policy, 2016, says no-parking zones are declared with the traffic police. A no parking board outside your gate does not create one. Permission steps for any sign visible from the road are in the banner permission guide. Confirm current orders with the ward office or the traffic branch.
How do I fix a no parking board to a gate or wall?
- Mark the holes inside the border, away from the letters.
- On an iron gate, pass nuts and bolts with washers through the panel.
- On brick or concrete, use wall plugs and screws with plastic caps.
- Set the lower edge about 4 to 5 ft above the ground, so bonnets do not hide it.
- Skip thin wire and cable ties, which turn brittle in sun and fail in the first strong gust.
3 Red Media prints every no parking board like these at its Chandni Chowk unit and can arrange fixing. Send the size, the wording and a photo of the gate through the quote form, and approve the proof before anything is printed.
